My girlfriend wants to start using birth control pills, and was wondering how many pounds, on average, do women gain with the average pills....

Also, she's considering about the birth control patches.... Do they have weight gains as effects as well, if so, how much weight?

I am on the pill and I haven't had any weight gain. I think it has more to do with each person's metabolism and whether or not the person is active. I know someone mentioned The Depo shot but it is not something that I would recommend. They use Depo as a form of liquid castration in prison for sexual offenders and predators, it can kill a sex drive and I am doubting that you want that unfortunate side effect. I was on it and I had that reaction too it and it wasn't explained what it's used for before I got the injection. Also right after I got off of it, I formed cysts on my ovaries. I can't say directly that it was from depo but I would almost bet on it.
Your best bet is the pill, it's the safest as far as side effects go.

Each different method effects an individual differently. I have been on Depo Provera for several years and the average weight gain is 10 pounds per year...I have not gained a pound. SO for the norm there are exceptions.

Gaining weight from "the pill" is relative to each person. Some pills that I've tried I gained about 5kgs, the one I'm on now, there is no weight gain. But I also don't think you will gain weight if you're careful about it, monitor it, make sure she eats well, healthy and she exercises, she'll be right.

It depends on the person and on the pill. Some people will gain weight on some pills and not on others as with any form of hormone based contraceptive. I used to take Nordette and put on 8kgs in a month, I went on Monofeme and lost the weight and havent put any more on. You tend to put it on because your appetite increases rather than making you store more fat. Speak to your dr and see which one they suggest. If you gain weight just change to a different one.
