ANd what can I do? It is not from years of drug use. I smoked weed maybe 5 times as a teen. I don't know of any other causes. I am 26 years old. My bad memory scares me sometimes though. There are huge portions of life I don't remember or I don't remember correctly. I have been talking to a friend that I was great friends with back in my mid teens. SHe keeps telling me about stuff and I am like..HUH? I forget how I met people..I forget what I said yesterday. I am afraid of what this will mena as I get older. WHat can I do at this point?

Hi

I also have what appears to be chunks of memory missing. I have learned to accept it. I think some of us get into a pattern of subconsciously or conciously blocking out certain memories or going into denial over certain things in our every day life and this wires our brain in a certain way such that it might affect memories we didn't want to lose. Brains can be rewired, that is the good news and is a fact. Scientists tried this experiment where they put on goggles on individuals that turned what the wearers saw upside down. After some time (can't remember the time span) their brains had been rewired such that they then saw the images the right way up. I can't remember where I read that sorry.

You can try and modify your diet though to help with general memory. One is taking fish oil for Omega 3 as this is a known concentration enhancer. Then there are herbs which boost the memory. One of these os Lemon Balm. Another is Arctic Root (Roseola rosea). They work on the lines of blocking the enzyme (cholinesterase) that breaks down a key brain messenger (ACh) so that memory function is improved.

Gingko biloba can also help by improving circulation to the brain. You have to be careful with this latter herb though as it thins the blood too - don't take if you are on anticoagulants. If you are on any medication it is always safer to talk to a pharmacist before you taken anything.

I don't think smoking weed 5 times would have affected you along the lines you are thinking. That does not constitute substance abuse so shouldn't have had any real impact.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Also, you are way too young to have first stage Alzheimers.

Best wishes.

Sometimes, it has got to do with the diet you are eating. a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and fish maybe could improve your memory and make you more alert in your daily activities. And for some they practice to remember, by playing those memory games. these are what card counters do i think, they practice to count cards in order to cheat the casino. Most importantly is to pay more attention during conversations and stuff. I have a friend who has bad memory too, at least that is what i imply, where in actual fact he is just not paying enough attention. He would ask me the exact same question a few times One of them is: dont you need to go to the army? And i told him no no no as i m not under conscription. And the last time i got quite pissed and explained to him what the F*ck is wrong with him and made sure he remembered the answer. Oh and cutting down on bad stuff like alcohol and changing your daily routine little by little would help too. For instance, take a new route on your way to work, this would train the brains to not be so consistent and predictable.

STRESS. The first thing affected by long-term stress/sleep deprivation (inadequate quality of sleep/not enough sleep time) is the memory.
Also chronic pain conditions, Fibromyalgia-often overlooked initially, depression, PTSD, certain side effects of medications, learning disorders...
The list of possibilities is long, you do need to be seriously evaluated by a professional to get to the root of the problem.
Get evaluated for free if you are attending a college of any type-learning disorders, aggravated by stress, especially long term and high levels of it, can be at the base of such problems.
I know this from my personal experience as well as from being a teacher.
This is too much for you to take care of in any efficient manner without the help of a professional. This is what they are for, so find one you like, and please take the very best care of yourself.

Maybe you are dissociating. That would explain everything. Especially if this has been going on for as long as you can remember. If so, Google dissociative diorder and see if it sounds familiar.

Maybe you smoked more than you remember. :)
Write down things that you want to remember. I find that helps even if I don't read what I have written.

Maybe you need to exercise your brain. If you don't use it, it gets lazy. To improve your memory, try reading regularly.
