There are defently a variety of styles. In Europe, what looks like a paiter's blotched clothes is highly popular, whereas in East Asia, leaves are popular. In fictitious stories, they almost always wear the wrong type. If they wore the correct stuff, the actor would just blend into the background. Black is only popular in TV because it makes them look cool without bleding in. In Vietnam it was done because the clothes were cheaper than getting them olive drab.
When hunting, it doesn't make much difference because animals will still smell you even if you did put something to try and cover the scent.
A soldier would wear whatever the terrain demanded.

It all depends on the environment...I do some paint balling and i feel that woodland hunters camo is the best during fall or winter in typical forests, the normal woodland camo works the best if you can find one that's a little darker than normal. It also depends on what the camo is for.

All depends on the environment you are in. Woodland camo would break your outline up better and make it harder to spot.

I like the pixel camo that the marines use best. it distortes and blurs. the smear camo is effective, but it is easier to recognise.
but the solid black ones are more for night stealth. Green appeals best to the eye in the dark.
again, my vote is on the pixel camo(which is not you are comparing but) it all depends on the situation.

"Black" is no longer used in "Camo", it is NOT a color found naturally in nature (in any abundance). Grey is a better night color, harder to see. The F-117 fighter was painted black, to give the pilots a psychological effect of being "Stealth", "Grey", was actually the color is was supposed to be.

Hands down the Marine Corps digital desert cammies. My Drill Instructors told us that unless they were touched with chlorine, that you couldn't see them with night vision goggles... I think that's what they said.
