i will be travelling with my Mom in Hong Kong this March and i understand we need an Octopus card to ride the public transportation. How much does it cost? How much does it cost to travel via train, bus or ferry from one island to another? I will be staying in Kowloon and plan to go to Disneyland, Ocean Park, the Big Buddha (Po Lin Monastery), among other places. How much do i need to save for transportation cost (in US dollar please)? Thank you!!!

The "Octopus" cards is a value stored card that is used for many forms of transportations such as MTR (subway), train, tram, ferry and bus. It is also honored in many convenience store like 7/11 or OK for minor purchases. It's great as it eliminates the need for small change and it's quick and there is no service charge for the use of it.
It cost HK$50 for the initial deposit and you can credit anything between HK$100-999 onto the card. When you are finished with it, just cancell it at any MTR station counter and they wil refund you the entire credit balance and the deposit.
There are many packaged deals for the above mentioned attractions which are either on the Lantau Island or Hong Kong Island side. Check the following sites for further research to get all the facts you need.
On average, budget US$10 for tranportation alone per person per day. The admission charges are around US$20 for each of the attractions.
P.S. US$1 = HK$7.8 for your own calculations.
