there really are no exercises that duplicate the motions performed when running. to be an efficient runner you have to run.

Make sure you're hitting the gym and doing some weight training with your legs. Squats, leg press, and lunges are all good. Actually, build up your upper body as well bc although your legs are primary in running, having a strong torso helps as well as your body works synergistically.

The above are all good answers - but do NOT forget to stretch before-hand. It's also good to do a light workout prior to running to get the blood pumping and oxygen moving. A few stretches with some jumping jacks and pushups or so should do it. Drink lots of fluids (preferrably water), as well. This keeps you hydrated and decreases cramping.

I run no less than 6Km 6 days a week, I couldn't run more than 10 steps 5 years ago :)

Run till you're tired and then walk, run when you catch your breath, then walk, your legs will get stronger the more you do it and so will your whole cardiovascular system.

many will say squats, but i stay away from squats because i am afraid to cause added stress/damage to my knees...leg lifts and calf raises have helped to strengthen my legs. i also stretch after my warm-up and right after my run; make sure to stretch ur IT band. I like to use the cylinder rollers on my IT bands to help loosen them up also. good luck!
