I would say this is a pretty reliable car. Compared to most 90s cars, this has very few problems.
But remember, if this is a high milage car, your going to be replacing everyone of those things listed if not done by the current owner.

If you are thinking of a car that old then clearly you a driving on a budget, no disrespect intended. Consider a Peugeot 306/106 or Citroen Saxo. There are plenty about, they do not seem to rust and they are fairly simple to maintain. About the only likely problem are things like electric window lifters and other niggling electrical faults. Vw Golf/polo are another alternative. A lot of people are suggesting Toyota and Honda, whilst these may be OK you have to consider the cost of parts. Typically, those makers change the models about every 3 years, the parts life span is limited in the after market supply and so you may be in a situation where you have to buy, say, a new headlight etc from the main dealers, that, I can assure you will make a large dent in your wallet. This is also a point to remember with any low volume car such as Hyundai, quite simply, there were never many sold, so the availability of parts is reduced.

Screw gsp! He is probably one of those guys running around in his momma's honda thinking it's fast because he beat some guy on a riding lawnmower!( Had One Never Did Again) What a sellout. I had a 90 Escort and it was a great car, the only prob I had was the transmission. But when your trying to race everything in sight like me when I was young it's only logical, something is going to give. If it is a well maintained car it's a great buy, but regardless you will have the normal wear and tear items that will need to be replaced from time to time, good luck my friend!

P.S. gsp I have a very streetable Stang that runs low 12's all motor, show me an import that can (ALL MOTOR ) Once I get the twin turbo setup installed rice will be what's for dinner and the only thing a honda or toy will see are taillights and me laughing in their faces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My daughter has a 93 Escort wagon and it's a great little car. My brother bought it used for $500 and drove it for several years. Then he gave it to her. We spent a couple hundred on it and it runs fine. It has well over 200,000 miles on it and is still probably one of our more reliable cars (out of 9 total). Plus, it gets great gas mileage! None of our Fords have ever left us stranded--unlike our GM which has several times.

Are you serious? Ford has never been known to be reliable, or any car built in the USA for that matter, ya gotta get a Honda or Toyota, (not the ones built over here) to have reliability. FORD stands for FOUND ON ROAD DEAD, or FIX OR REPAIR DAILY. I wonder why they call it an escort? Because you better have somebody escort you in case it tears up. or escort the mechanic to it?

I hate Fords but my sister had an Escort stationwagon that gave her over 200,000 miles before she needed major work. If properly cared for, they are good cars.

Yes they are good cars, The first thing I would do is replace the water pump and timing belt, the pump is ran off the timing belt and will leave you stranded. It is a good preventive maintenance thing to do. And replace the belt every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. They are good cars and work on them for years. If I was buying one that is all that I would do.
