While the bones can be held together by wires ( the sternum is put back together this way after open-heart surgery) it is more common to hold bones together by using what is called 'instrumentation.' These are rods, screws and plates that can be attached to the bones and hold them together until they heal. Often, they are left in place permanently (rather than making the patient undergo a second surgery, and all of it's risks), however, once the bone has healed they can be removed if necessary.
