Being ignorant about science is one thing, but forcing others to suppress information in support of that ignorance is insane. I thought this crap stopped centuries ago.

I feel nauseous. I don't care what people believe. If they want to believe in alien abductions, angels, JFK Conspiracy theorys.....believe away....but this nation was founded on the idea of keeping religion divided from Government. The Grand Canyon falls under the jurisdiction of government. If they want to sell books about Noah's Ark in a church near the Grand Canyon, sell away. But public tax dollars pay for that gift shop. Public tax dollars are not supposed to be used in a way that favors the establishment or promotion of a religion.
The thing that most upsets me is the fundamentalist attitude of this nation always being Christian. It wasn't. Many of the founding fathers were deists. Many only paid lip service to religion when they had to.
As far as how and why the Separation of Church and State happened...it was two primary reasons. Obviously the economic/power issue. The upper middle class merchant group that was the power base of the American Revolution had historically been opposed by..and opposed....Government interfereence and economic advantages favoring religious institutions. But another reason was that America had so many different religious groups.
Our forefathers were smart enough to realize that unless no religion was used for the state...they would perpetually battle over who's religion was used. They compromised. They kept it out of the Government all together. The interesting thing is that the separation has had the effect of PROMOTING religion in this nation. Europe..where state held religions are still the norm...is far less religious as a continent then we are! Part of that is because of reactions towards State sponsored religions.
If the fundamentalists get prayer back in schools it's only a matter of time before the issue becomes which prayer to use....Lutheran or Baptist. It's better for everyone...including them...to keep the prayers in church. And to keep non-scientific faith based books out of public property gift stores.

I do not know enough about geology to comment? I am a Christian that believes in evolution. The evidence will clearly only support one answer. There is a big difference between 6000 years and millions... My main argument it this: If God was the creator of everything, (and some science is fact) then isn't God the creator of science? It would be very interesting to see what the scientific evidence was really supporting. Anyway good food for thought!

Arg. It's this type of thing that makes me ashamed to be American. At least I didn't vote for that numbskull of a president. When he was governor of Texas he left his mark:
