She's a 2 yr old Chow Chow & she just got spayed yesterday (we picked her up this am), she's been very, very quiet & sleeping most of the day, she barely started drinking some water tonight & i've taken her out about 5-6 times but I want to make sure she'll be ok inside all night without going to pee. How can they hold it. It seems she's trained pretty good.

She will let you know when she has to go. If she's not trained, you will notice her sniffing around looking for a spot. If she is trained, she will either go to the door (they pick that up very fast!) or she will find you to take her out. Adult dogs have no problem holding their bladder until morning. Thank you for spaying!!!

She should be able to make it through the night and should be good during the day for at least 8 hours as long as she gets a good walk in the morning for exercise and bathroom time my dog goes out minimum of three times per day morning after work and before bed sometimes she gets to go out at lunch time. WAY TO GO ON ADOPTING FROM A SHELTER AND SPAYING HAVE FUN WITH YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND!!!

Most living organisms, after anesthesia, don't go to the bathroom for a good 12 hours--the body seems to take the involuntary shutdown very seriously...!

She'll probably sleep through the night with no problems...

8 hours is generally a long time to make an animal wait for future reference, although many owners will tell you that their dogs go for 12+ hours, so it's really an individual thing...

Remember that a 6 week old puppy is very, very young and just a baby. You and your husband should have educated yourselves about potty training before even bringing her home. Crate training is the best way to go. It is not the puppies fault that she is not learning how to potty outside. you got to place her on a feeding schedule and take her out very often . You have to have more patience and consistency. The younger the puppy is the longer it can take to potty train all the way. your not a bad dog owner, just have not done all of your homework . Yelling at such a young puppy is the worst thing to do. Even you did "trade" for a different puppy your still going to need to know how to potty train .

Dogs can hold it for a good 8-10 hours. The more you can take her out the better. She will be OK to have in side all night while you are sleeping. You will see her start to perk up a bit as she starts to heal form getting spaid, also once she starts to get more comfortable with you and your family she will perk up a bit too. You will learn when she needs to go out, and she will learn how to tell you. Eventually you will find that you two have a fairly set routine. thanks for helping her and taking her in. I hope you have a long happy life with here.

good luck

She should be able to hold it if she is trained. However, my yellow lab was fully house trained and after she got spayed she has accidents in the house. She is 14 mnths old. I called the vet and they thought she may have a bladder infection and put her on some meds...didn't work. She still has accidents sometimes.

3 times a day should be fine, the first being early in the morning and the last quite late in the evening, so that the interval is the minimum possible. If she wants to go out more, I expect she will give a sign, like groan, pull you, scratch the door, etc.

Basics of the Method

Here are the basics of a simple potty training routine for a dog.

1. Take her outside (and stay till she's done or a long time has gone by with no results):

*

As soon as she wakes up in the morning (You don't have to be awake.. much!)
*

Right after her breakfast
*

Right after her lunch
*

Right after her naps
*

Right after taking her out of his crate
*

Right after her dinner
*

Right after any snacks of much size
*

Right before her bedtime
*

If he whimpers in the night

Praise him in a cheery voice when he produces.

I hope this helps!

Every 6 - 8 hours overnight should be fine. Shes older so she has better bladder control but she may have little accidents because shes in a new environment

Just offer her a chance at bedtime, and she should be OK until you get up, if you don't sleep too late.
I would leave a towel at the door, so if she gets desperate, there is a place for her to go..Most trained dogs want to do it at the door if they have no way to get outside.
Congratulations! on adopting your new friend!
