make a list of things to say and refer to it when the conversation needs oomph. you never know, things might just roll. talk about school, sports, someting funny that happened to you, and questions about him and his life. since you are calling him, he has to provide some of the entertainment too, you're already putting out kinda (it's a good thing though). and when the conversation drops? tell him it was fun talking to him, you guys will have to hang out sometime, here's my phone number, and it's your turn to call me!!

ask questions that require long answers. tell him stories or something to blow away time tell him about you ask him about him self and if the silence comes just tell him you'll call him back and if he asks make up a reason.

Call him, if the conversation doesn’t flow then ask him questions about himself. People can seldom run out of conversation when they are talking about themselves.
