I have never played golf before and want to start. I do not know how to play. Can anyone explain the basics of the techniques, strokes, the different clubs, and back and top spin?

you can only read so much about golf starting off. best to get a pga instructor. and don't buy expensive clubs to start off. you haven't developed a swing and what not to buy clubs that are right for you. plus it's a large investment and some people end up not really liking the game after a few times.

order the rules of golf from the usga. its a long book. but it really helps u. and u will learn all the techniques and strokes from ur teacher. dont let someone influence you that wants to tell u on the net or not even see how u swing. a starter set will have all the clubs that u need to get started. go to walmart, kmart. anyone of those. when u just start out. u just need to make solid contact. dont worry about some club that is supposed to be the best. if u cant hit it in the center of the club face. then its just wasted money. as for back spin and top spin forget about it. just try to hit the ball in the center of the club face every time. and follow all the drills ur teacher gives u. you have to put in ur time hitting balls before u play. if you dont, then u just hold people up and make their round unenjoyable by being so slow. and i promise u. u will have no fun. if u hit it 100 yds and then miss it and chunk it. they all add strokes to ur score. if u hit it in the center of the face, then are well on your way to success and fun. golf is a game of a lifetime.

The best way to learn the basic techniques of golf is to take a few lessons. If there is a nine-hole golf course in your area, talk to someone who may be able to direct you to an inexpensive beginning golf class. They may even offer one. Colleges and universities in your locale may also offer golf classes to those who are not full-time students.
Don't invest money in a complete set of golf clubs until you have had some lessons. Many professional golfers only use three or four clubs out of the eight or ten they may carry.
With a few lessons, you will be able to play the short, nine-hole courses, learning as you go. Practice is essential to golf. You must play every day; but, once you begin, you will want to!

How long is a piece of string?
There are some great book on the market, but lessons are the best way to start. I play off a 16 handycap, on a good day and have been playing for 9 years, and am still learning the game.
The best advise I can give is.
1. Watch the back of the ball.( most important thing in golf.)
2. Slow swing, straight arms. (means smooth half circle) like
a banana.
3. Keep lower part of body still.
I find if I watch the back of the ball, the rest takes care of it,s self. Watching the back of the ball, keeps body still.

4get about asking Q's on here until u have had some lessons. It is really silly to think that u can learn any more on here than what u will with a coach esp when it comes to back and top spin! U need to have and an established grip and swing b4 you start worrying about the more involved aspects of the game. It can take years to establish a knowledge of the game...not just a Q or 2.

My advice is to go to your local PGA professional and buy a cheap set of clubs, he will point you in the right direction if you tell him your a beginner. Organise a few lesson with him, if hes a good pro he will probably work on your grip and set-up to begin with and you can learn the swing from there.
You will pick up the different techniques, rules and etiquette as you go along, but be patient is doesnt happen over night unfortunately! Its a great game though, you'll be glad you took it up.

I would say that you should go golfing with a friend, who knows how to golfing. It helps develop skills, from watching others play. They will also help you "if" you need it. Remember, follow through, as long of a back stroke, make the same length for your follow through.
