A ringworm is a type of fugus. There are OTC anti-fungal medications that will work and the cost will stay pretty low. If you don't know what kind to get just ask the pharamist is the best, it is his job to tell you LOL. But pretty much they all have the same ingredance in them, some just might be stronger or weaker than others.

How is ringworm treated?
Ringworm can be treated topically (with external applications) or systemically (for example, with oral medications):
Topical treatment: When fungus affects the skin of the body or the groin, many antifungal creams can clear the condition in two weeks or so. Examples of such preparations include those that contain clotrimazole (Cruex cream, Desenex cream, Lotromin cream, lotion, and solution, and Lotrisone cream); miconazole (Monistat-Derm cream and Lotrimin cream, powder, and spray); ketoconazole (Nizoral cream and shampoo); and terbinafine (Lamisil cream and solution). These treatments are effective for many cases of foot fungus as well.
Systemic treatment: Some fungus infections do not respond well to external applications. Examples include scalp fungus and fungus of the nails. To penetrate these areas, oral medications are necessary.
For a long time, the only effective antifungal tablet was griseofulvin (Fulvicin, Grifulvin, and Gris-PEG). In recent years, newer agents have been introduced that are both safer and more effective. These include terbinafine (Lamisil), itraconazole (Sporanox), and fluconazole (Diflucan). Reputations die hard, however, and many people continue to fear that even these newer agents are "bad for the liver," when in fact they are quite safe when used properly.

Iodine solution and Mercurachrome both are effective in the control of ringworms and are cheap to buy.
To prevent ringworms I suggest you get rid of the cat if you have one as they are often the source of this foul little invader.
Kissing and fondling of cats whether they be yopurs or someone elses are always a risk. Cats like dogs lick their anus and then their fur they transfer the organism to humans who touch them.

Ugh, I know just how your husband feels. I had something that ended up oozzing and draining from a simple knick. It spread not only on my ankel, but everywhere. I couldn't go outside or anything. It took nearly 2-3 months for it to go away...but that was after I decided to go to the doctors.
Have your hubby try some anti fungal creame for starters.

1:1 solution of cider vinegar and water
Any anti fungal with Moconazole and/or Clotrimazole (which is probably what the prescription was for)
Vagisil contain Moconazole... Lotramin might also.
