Everything happens for a reason. There is no doubt.

I believe this concept is meant to pacify those who have lived through trauma. Unfortunately, sometimes bad and good things just happen due to the chaotic and mostly unpredictable variables in life. Certainly we set actions in motion and we can guide those actions, but the currents of life take even well-planned intentions way off course.

For instance, we're all devastated about the way things are going in the Middle East. If a cataclysmic natural disaster comes along (like global warming) all bets about that situation could be off.

having a fixed destiny would imply that we're all puppets on strings. I don't buy that.

If you really experienced that then I am happy you survived and I understand you're looking for a reason to explain these things but really, it is all just random chance events following from previous random chance events. You were lucky, isn't that awesome? No need to suppose anything deeper than that.

Correction: Everything happen for a reason has nothing to do with destiny, therefore I can not answer the question.

Yes, all things happen for a reason. Sometimes it takes a very long time before the reason becomes apparent though.

I believe that God "allows" things to happen for a reason, to help you grow and bring you closer to Him. I've had many things happen; which at the time I really couldn't understand, but now that I look back, it all worked together for good in my life.

Well, everything happened for a reason right? Nothing just happens, something made it happen. So sure, when I put it that way to myself, destiny must be real.
