That's the cost of the Home Basic upgrade version:

Home Basic = $199 for full version & $99 for upgrade
Home Premium = $239 for full version & $159 for upgrade
Home Ultimate = $399 for full version & $259 for upgrade

There are many different versions of Windows Vista -- Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate -- and then you OEM, Retail/shrink-wrapped, academic versions.

Here's a more detailed post with price comparisons for various retailers that show the MSRP for Windows Vista Home Premium (the version most people need) at $280, but being sold for as low as $115 for the FULL VERSION (not upgrade that you saw for $99): http://www.valupoint.com/weblog/2007/01/what-vista-actually-what-deal.html

You may also be one of 15 Million people that qualify for additional discounts for Vista as low as $69 for a fully licensed version: http://www.essistme.com/2007/01/31/why-students-can-get-legal-copies-of-windows-vista-for-as-low-as-69/

Hope that helps!

That form of Vista is merely a XP plus upgrade. It doesn't include the Aero Glass interface. You get mostly security updates and a few other "bells and whistles." It is for computers that really don't fit the higher requirements for the other versions of Vista.

That's the price for the upgrade version of Vista Home Basic, so I'd guess that's what you saw.

If it was Vista Basic then it was no deal. That's how much it cost.
