I work with a girl who adamently says she is not allowed by her religion (Mormonism) to work on Sundays or do literally anything at all on that day other than going to church and then coming home. Yet every Sunday, I see her (and other coworkers who are devout Mormons) at work having a grand time. I also happen to be related to several Mormons, many of whom have requirements to be at work on Sundays, either every week or simply on occasion, and none of them have ever once mentioned such requirements/restrictions due to religion. My grandpa for example is a real estate agent and Sunday is a vital day for home buyers and sellers.
Is that girl making up her own religious rules and calling it Mormonism while not practicing what she preaches or is this really how things work?

Many Mormons still follow the rule about keeping Sunday a Holy Day. They do not work and do not do anything that would require another to work either. They use the day for church, study, prayer, and family much like OT Jews kept the Sabbath (Saturday) as Holy because during creation it was the day that God rested. Many however have let this belief fall by the wayside because they feel they cannot live successfully with out working on that day or because they feel it is not a strict rule. And some will just use it to try and be lazy. I am sorry you have such a poor example in the girl. Good luck.

If you are mormon you are suppose to follow the commandment of keeping the Sabbath day holy. You are to do everything possible to not work on sunday. There are some jobs where that is impossible like police, medical, military, but for most jobs you can establish straight from the start that you will not be available on Sunday to work. If you are working on Sunday and it isn't absolutely necc then you are not following the commandment. This doesn't just apply to work. The day is suppose to be a day of rest, meaning that it should be sort of down time to focus on your God and your family. You really shouldn't be participating in any organized sports or shopping or eating out.
There are no specific do's or don'ts except for pretty much working when not necc and shopping when not necc. Some families take the commandment as far to mean only spending quality time with family and doing religious activities and dont even watch tv, but most arent that strict about it.
Your friend isnt lying or making up the rules, she just isn't practicing what she preaches. The friends and family you have that are working on Sunday I couldnt really speak for them because every situation is unique and I don't really know the circumstances under which they are working on Sunday for.

Well, you'd better get some answers from the Mormon's in the next hour or so, because none of them surf the net on Sunday's either. :-) Hey, we all have ideals to aspire to, and most of us don't make it. Yes, Mormons have the expectation as you've stated it; so do many other Christian faiths. It calls each of us to discernment and reflection about our lives and dedication to serve God in the next week. And some do better than others at actually living this out.

Exodus 20: 8, 10
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
• • •
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
It is a personal choice, it is a commandment, but some are required like you said to work on Sunday. I will not take any job that requires me to work on Sunday and I believe I have been blessed for that. Now what exactly is keeping the sabbath day holy? I don't think there is a specific answer for that. I spend Sundays going to church and visiting with family. Some might read their scriptures all day long. Some might go fishing. I think it is between a person and the Lord what they feel is keeping it holy. And, hopefully, we can know how the Lord wants us to keep it holy.

We are to observe the Lords day the best we can. But we are not to give up family or our lively hood just to do so. If your job requires your work on Sunday then at times you have to work if your family depends on your making a living to support them. If you have a choice then you should not work but do the lords work or rest.

I'm not a LDS, but I know several. As far as I know, it is a Church order/requirement. Now, whether or not the particular LDS follows that direction is really up to them. Everyone follows their religion as closely or loosely as is for them.
