Many people think "spirituality" is or should be synonymous with "Christianity". But you're right, you don't have to be a theist to be spiritual. In fact, one of the most spiritual people I know is a good friend of mine who's an atheist.

When religion became a dirty word, many flocked to the word "spiritual". Most people don't know what that word means, and truly the meaning has been completely blurred by the common usage.

You don't. Many people are unable to see the world beyond their own beliefs. That doesn't take away the spirituality you find without a god.

Who assumes such a thing. I know of no one. By the way Buddhist don't believe in a deity yet they are the most spiritual faith.

Peace!
My Webster Dictionary says spiritual pertains to the soul or spirit. Do atheists believe that people are spiritual beings? Do they believe people have a soul? If they do, it is tantamount to saying they believe in God.

I know that some atheists meditate, but it is more for relaxation and self-awareness. They are not praying to someone but their own selves.

So my answer to your question is: yes, one must be theist to be spiritual. I am sure you won't like my answer because I think you are an atheist.

Well that is not the correct assumption. It's assumed, and rightly so, that one must be a Christian to be correctly spiritual.
