Personality-wise, they are great dogs. But I would never own one because they've been overbred and will have expensive medical issues (skin, ears, eyes, epilepsy) more likely than not. I don't have that kind of money (and I work for a vet!!) It's a shame what backyard breeders do to a breed. If you do get a Cocker, you need to make sure you do your homework and get a good show-quality breeder, and do some digging to find out if there's medical issues in the lines he/she breeds from.
And like Todd said..... Start savin your money for the vet bills because you'll be paying your vet with a second mortgage if you don't. We see Cockers almost every day of the week, and there is only ONE that actually looks the way he's supposed to and doesn't have any medical issues (yet)-he's still a pup.

You really have to research your sources with cockers...! They have been, probably, more overbred than any other dog breed in America (they were the most popular dog in America for many years).
It is VERY hard to find a cocker that passes into ripe old age without any ear, ear canal issues, or skin problems. Dermatologically, most cockers are time bombs waiting to errupt. Soft excema is the most common problem, but yeast infections of the skin are rampant as well.
Many cockers require a specialized surgery where new ear canals have to made, becuase the natural ear canals have closed due to excessive swelling from chronic ear infections.
All of these are NOT worse case scenarios--they are very common occurances with cocker spaniels.
I don't mean to put you off--cockers can be the most sweetest and loyal of companion dogs. But like I tell clients, when you adopt a cocker puppy, put $2500 into a savings account and expect to spend at least this much on vets bills over the dogs life. If you can do that without reservation, you are an ideal candidate for cocker ownership.
The few cockers I have meet, as an animal care professional, that did not have ANY ear or skin issues, I can count on my hands--and I have meet thousands of cockers...
Cockers can also be plagued with temprament issues, from much line breeding and poor back yard breeding. Some can be quite savage biters, particularily when being brushed and combed, tugged on the fur--something every cocker needs to learn at an early age. Grooming is a big commitment with cockers--expect to spend at least $50 a month for professional grooming services over the dogs life.

We had one when I was a kid and we lived on the ocean. He loved it and we loved him. Made me laugh to watch him swim because his long floppy ears floated out beside him. He loved the water and could hardly wait until we all went out to the beach. He was happy to spend the whole afternoon there with us just playing in the water.

I love all the different dog breeds. Labradors and Sibes are my favorite. My favorite Cockers are the ASCOB ones.
