Vitamin D- both the milk kind and the kind made by your skin when exposed to sunlight (vitamin D3), is absorbed, modified, and released by the liver and then converted by the kidneys into calcitriol, a hormone essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorous by the small intestine. Since bones need calcium and phosphorous, a vitamin D deficiency will lead to impaired bone maintenance and growth. Hope this helped.

You need vitamin D to fix calcium to the bones... now, you need light, sunlight to synthetize vitamin D. I mean not exposing yourself to UV rays... but only being in contact with natural light.
