This is usually hot spots or allergies. Try changing the food you use to one with very few fillers and / or add a skin/coat suppliment to it's diet to stop the problem. Topical medications help but only treat symptoms not cause. You really want to find the cause quickly before this scratching that cuts the skin causes a serious infection. Litter boxes are a bacteria haven even if clean often and can be a problem for a cat that has open wounds. Another thing most people over look is their flea/tick treatments....cat could be reacting to that and need different brand and also residue left on carpets from powder airfresheners or cleaners.Change one at a time until problem is gone. most common is diet though with either the food or needing a suppliment.

Without some more details, it's really hard to say.

It could be any number of things.... If she's scratching her ears real hard, then that could possibly be ear mites. If she's a medium to long hair kitty, and she's scratching her fur, she could be irritated by the shedding underlayer of her fur. Or there could be a possibility of something in your home that is irritating her or causing allergy.

The best recommendation I can give is to take your kitty to the vet and let him/her give her an examination. There is no sense in letting this thing torment her anymore.

Hope this helps.

It sounds like she either has fleas, mites, or a skin infection. The best thing to do is to take her to the vet so that she can be diagnosed and then given the proper medical care. I'm sure it's making you upset to watch her hurt herself. It's only going to get worse until you find out what it is and get her the proper treatment. Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear.

If your cat is so itchy she's cutting herself you should definately take her to the vet.

It could be fleas which are easily treated with drops, or a skin allergy which can be treated with antibiotics or possibly a course of steroids.

Ringworm is a bacterial skin infection which causes a lot of irritation, this is normally treated with a skin bath & antibiotics. Ringworm is highly contagious & can be passed on to humans too.

Someone else mentioned ear mites, which is also easily treated with drops.

Best wishes.x

She may have allergies, talk to your vet about it. She may also be scratching at the healing wounds from a previous trauma since wounds itch as they heal. They need to heal though to prevent infections. In the meantime, get her some soft paws nail caps to prevent further trauma. Wiping the area with a warm clean washcloth will keep debris from building up around it and causing infections. Keep an eye on the wounds for the skin becoming inflammed and hot. If that happens, vet immediately.

Maybe her skin is dry and itchy. Try a salt bath. Or if she hates water, wet a cloth in some salty water and rub it all over her. Salt is a natural healer.
