I just asked the question in Yahoo Answers, "If you do not believe in God, why do you get so angry at people believing you will go to hell?" Most of the people who answered seem to read the question "angry at people telling you you will go". Do you think this was a subconscious "dodge" of the question? What is your theory?

Responding to the "mind reader" answers I know that certain groups beleive that I am going to eternal punishment. Some of these groups have not came and told me this. I know that they believe it, yet I am not offended by it or feel they hate me. I just don't understand why others do.

I BELIEVE those people are so blinded and stubborn, they do not have the patience to properly read a question.

I think that all of us get outraged when we are judged by someone else's beliefs and values rather than our own. No I don't think it is a dodge at all. Do you feel angry when I say that I think your concept of God is nothing but a lie? Sure you do. Do you find any offense that I consider your Christian beliefs about sex to be sick and twisted. Sure you do. It's a sign that I have no respect for you when I say that. It doesn't matter what side of the fence anybody is on. What matters is that we respect one another and give each other room to practice our beliefs without stepping on one anothers toes too often. And we all do from time to time. It's just part of the human condition.

You've asked a very good question, and you're follow-up is even better. I suspect the anger comes from feeling that if people think you are "going to hell," then it's because you deserve it, and that may allow them to feel justified in treating you with less respect. However, a true Christian belief and treatment of an athiest would be non-judgemental, starting with two basic premises. One, that this is for God's decision and knowledge only, and second, that God is all merciful.

I think that most people think we're here to gloat over the fact that those who believe in Jesus Christ are going to heaven, and they assume along with that that we're glad that there are people who are going to go to hell. Cain was angry because God chose Abel's offering which showed Abel's understanding of God's plan to save the world through the sacrifice of the Lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world, and not by anything we can do on our own, and they are following Cain's example when they hate us for showing them the truth.

The net result is the same, is it not? By the way, I can't remember the last time I read a Christian's mind and found this filthy belief lurking. Of course we responded to the repeated expressions (your question included) of this belief. Can you read my mind and divine whatever hateful thoughts I might be thinking about you?

Well, it's not really your place to tell anyone they're going to hell. It's gods call.
And I don't like the way the question is worded because it asumes that if you do not believe in god, you get angry when people tell you you are going to hell. that's like asking "when did you stop beating your wife?"
Perhaps a better choice of words would be "if you do not believe in god, does it make you angry when people tell you that you are going to hell?"

Maybe because there might be a little tiny core belief that there IS something to what so many people believe in, and they feel bad about being caught out ?
I really don't know .... most days I have a hard enough time figuring out what I'm thinking - let alone what other people are thinking! lol !

Thats, why, it wasn't a subconsious dodge. People get mad because people are telling them where they are going to go. When you respect someone elses opinions, you don't do things like that. It is almost a form of disrespect.
I do believe in God by the way, that is just my theory.

Maybe they thought the question implied that: you can't be a good person if you don't believe in God. Even though thats probably not what you meant.

I don't get angry when someone says I'm going to Hell. I just don't believe them.

Haha that is funny but I believe that it is due to the fact that almos all humans have a subconscious knowledge (or feeling if you will) of a higher being. Why else do you think there is a main religion revolving around one higher being in almost every culture of the world.
