The new terminology for RSD is now CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome). It is a type of neuropathic pain that is extremely painful and can become debilitating if not aggressively treated. Fentanyl is a good pain medication, however, neuropathic pain generally responds better to medications that are in another class such as anticonvulsants, or antidepressants. Don't get me wrong, fentanyl will work for your pain but it is generaly needed in higher doses than normal and its efficacy would be enhanced by the addition of one of those other medications. If you are not seeing an interventional pain management physician already, you should. He can also help get the pain under better control with not only the medications but with some nerve blocks targeted at the sympathetic nervous system. This type of pain also responds well to spinal cord stimulation.

Sounds like this RSD is a very painful chronic pain so i don't see why you could not be on Fentanyl patches IF the pain is that chronic! Me myself suffer from SEVERE scoliosis, lumber fused which led to lose 2 inches in height which screwed up my knee and hip. Just had a total hip replacement on the 11th of Jan.......................MUCH better but NOT my back. I take Lortab for the pain and Soma for the muscle spasms...............they have put me on everything under the sun........the Fentanyl patches, Oxycodone, Avinza (time release morphine), Methodone, etc. but they all made me sidk so i just stick to the Lortab..........................good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
