When I started to read your question I jumped to the conclusion that he was in heat (yea the boy cats get that too) but then... if he doesnt want to go outside, then I'm not sure if he is in heat. Maybe he got in a fight with another cat outside.. or else he just wants some extra attention. Cats go through stages as they grow up.. when they are kittens they might be playful but arent a "lap cat" but as they get older, they might develop an attachment to you where they just wont leave you alone. The only thing you can do is appreciate the affection because one day your cat might change and not want to be around people at all. Believe me.. I know. lol

I would have to agree with the other responses that he might be a she in heat. Female cats in heat will make that trilling noise almost constantly. Mine does!!
It is a possibility that he/she was ID'd as a male when a kitten by mistake. This mistake has happened many times in the shelter I work at, especially with long haired cats. Many times the thick fur can fool someone.
Also, it can be determined wrong, simply by the fact that most people don't really look. They swipe a quick hand across the back of the underbelly and determine what they "felt".
I know this sounds strange, but it has happened before.
I would definately, though, take the kitten to the vet for an examination. If it is indeed a male, he seems to be trying to tell you something is wrong.
Good Luck

If you are sure you cat is a male, he may have a urinary tract infection.
If your cat is indeed a female, she would be in heat and looking for a mate.
In either case, I would take your cat to the vet for a regular check-up just to be on the safe side.

Either the cat just sees something(s) he likes or he is looking for a girlfriend. If he starts spraying on the floor, it's time to get him fixed.

Well is it a he or a she? It sounds like SHE is in heat. Which means you need to get her fixed or get her a boy cat and have kittens. But it lasts for about a week. Once a month. AND you will not sleep or have any peace for this week.

When a cat does not want to go out that usually means they have been traumatized and needs reassurance from you. There are many dangers out there and you should keep your cat indoors and safe.
They depend on us for protection, please keep your cat safe and inside with you.

if not fixed, could be in heat.
another pet recently leave, die? could be a cry of missing another.
if he is following you around, he might not be getting enough attention. cats normally need at least 15 minutes of solid attention per day.
