They're just protecting their territory. The mailman comes periodically, doesn't stay, just makes a delivery and leaves, and the dog thinks, "Hey, I did good, I chased off the intruder," and the aggression is reinforced.

Well the reason that they seem to get agressive or bark is because they first see the mail-man entering their territory.. they bark, and the mail man walks away (he just drops off the mail and leaves).. so the dog thinks that the barking worked to keep him out of the territory.. every day this happens so the dog gets more conditioned to think he is protecting the territory because the mail-man ALWAYS leaves when the dog barks. This can eventually lead to the dog running after him (if he is outside and has the opportunity).

I think it has something to do with the fact that the individual comes up, pays no attention to them and isn't even greeted by you. Then when the dog starts to bark the person appears to be driven away and this happens time and time again. The dog is rewarded both by the person leaving and by you shouting at them to be silent. So naturally they find great satisfaction in the whole experience!

Most dogs dont hate the mail man. They tend to get conditioned over time to successfully scaring him off in thier own mind. Because they act defensive and he leaves. dogs dont get that he is only there for a few seconds and leaves anyway, they start to beleive that they have cause him to leave by either barking or growling or lunging and ...it works, they repeat it and voila...

Actually I have found that the reason dogs hate mailmen is because of the uniform! My best friends pitbull does that and so do my great dane and terrier! I think almost all dogs do. They hate the UPS guy, the police, everyone in a uniform!

He's a stranger walking up to the dogs territory, your dog barks, the mail man leaves, your dog thinks that he scared him off, and he protected his territory.

My canine (a German shepherd/Chow blend) would not ideas the mailman, yet she fairly hates the united statesdelivery guy with a interest. He would not even ought to end at our domicile, all he has to do ischronic the truck down our street and my canine loses her ideas. And if he extremely comes as a lot because the door to provide a kit... properly, all hell breaks free to assert the least!

I don't know, but my dog wants to kill the milkman. Every day, he sneaks into the house and goes upstairs with my wife... which is a little strange... Anyway - After he comes back down, the dog merely tries to rip his head right off his body! I think dogs are just strange animals.

Probably because dogs naturally defend their territory - the mail man "trespasses" daily!
