I tried a steak knife once and cut my finger wide open so I wouldn't try that...but that doesn't answer your question now does it? Sorry.

Yeah. I was desperate to open one once and didn't have a corkscrew. I took a screw driver and screwed 3 screws into the top of the cork. I then took the slot on the back of a hammer and nestled the three screws into it. I put the bottle between my legs and pulled up slowly and the cork slowly slid out. Ghetto, but it works! All you need is 3 screws and a hammer.

Take a knife and run around the edges, then place the knife or screw driver in the middle of the cork and apply heavy pressure or do what I do use a hammer it force the cork down. Sometimes the cork will come apart be careful not to swallow it

Funny story
My friend and i were trying to open a bottle of wine, we were gabbing at it with screwdrivers, sissies, knifes, everything ................... lesson to be learned, if you manhandle a glass bottle for a long period of time it will break and still red wine all over your carpet.
