If you want to try it out before you install it, you can try Ubuntu Linux. You can download a free cd at http://www.ubuntu.com . Just download and burn the cd, then reboot your computer and boot from the cd like you are installing it. It will load Ubuntu from the cd without installing it (this is called a live cd) and let you mess around, even install it, from the Ubuntu desktop.

I think it is a great system for all computers, I've used it on many. I currently use it on my laptop, and with a special little program, it makes managing my wireless networking a breeze! This system is probably the best one for a beginner.

Oh, and just to be nerdy, I must add that technically Linux isn't an operating system, but a kernel. (if you really want to get into that, look it up on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_%28computer_science%29)

Technicallities... :D

Its somewhat unique but the key advantage Linux has is the reliability. Windows has a problem with too many background processes and services, and a shitty job done on coding the OS. Linux isn't easy it takes some time and alot of memorizing. Start off with a Linux+ book and go through that a few times..

There are many Linux books available, so you might want to start at your local library. As for web sites, here are some that might be helpful:

If you live near a university, you might want to check with their Computer Science department - many universities have active Linux user groups that are willing to help you out. In fact, most Linux users are very friendly and more than happy to be of assistance if they can. Linux can be intimidating at first, but it's not that bad, really. It does take some adjustment, but once you get the hang of it it can be lots of fun.

www.ubuntu.com is a good place to start. Easy to learn, and you can download a cd for free to install. I have found it superior to windows except in the area of wireless networks. Some Linux distributions are a nightmare to install, this one is not. I also like Freespire, available from www.freespire.com. Think outside the window!!!

An excellent resource for Linux is
"The Linux Documentation Project" http://www.tldp.org/
This web site has many "How-to's" and "Guides"

With Linux, you really have to be technical with it.
I had been on that system before and didn't find it easy to operate.

This will help you at any level.
It is a good programmers tool. I am a software engineer.
And I like it best.
Another good toll is the library look in linux .org and they have books to buy and look at. Use them.
