There are a number of reasons that would cause him to respond like that.... I can think of only 1 or 2 that would not be bad news for your relationship.

If you want to live in ignorance, next time he's late, "I'm glad you're home, I was worried...." Say it with relief in your voice, and leave it at that.

If you want the truth, good or bad, be honest with him....

Let him know that "we can't handle this like adult unless we both have the full story."... just be sure you're ready for whatever he tells you, and I mean it!

If the bad news is that he's cheating on you, be calm about it, let him know that you're not happy about it, and that the two of you will need to find a different living arrangement.... No petty stuff like in the movie...

If the bad news is that he's got family that his mom has cancer and he was visiting her, be prepared to be gentle and supportive...

just brush it of .... if he id doing anything he will bust himself all men are stupid like that.....by the Way that is the remark of some who does need a babysitter....good luck
