Science Diet.

2007-01-27 16:40:42 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 0 4

NEITHER......................
Dog chow has nothing but fillers and cancer causing agents in it.
Science diet is the same way. Science diet is NOT recommended by the vet because of nutritional factors it is promoted because they get a kick back from the company that sells it. It is OVERPRICED and OVER RATED......
If u are going to spend that much on science diet, then go with a GOOD nutritional food like canidae, solid gold, california natural, dick van pattens formula, or innova. This is a few good quality healthy foods to feed your loved pooch.
People think because the vet recommends science diet it has to be the best for your dog, THIS IS NOT true.
Vets are pet DOCTORS Not NUTRITIONISTS.

Neither. There are lots of healthier choices out there now but if I had to pick between those two and there were no other possible choices other than starving the dogs, I would choose either one, if that was all that was available.
I am all too aware of what goes into many dog foods. Not all the expensive brands are good either.
Some of the better brands of dog food:
Authority Harvest Baked (PetSmart line of food-very reasonably priced)
Pet Botanics Lamb log or Beef Log
Natural Balance
Royal Canin
Nature's Recipe

These are some of the more broadly available dog foods that are excellent. Other brands I wouldn't recommend that cost more and are imo worthLESS are:

BilJac (lots of by-products, beet pulp and molasses etc)

Not too good brand imo: Nutro (lots of dogs throw up the hard kibble) They changed some of their food formula recently adding SOY which is bad for dogs.

In my opinion Medical is the best dog food on the market, but very pricey and in Canada you can only buy it from a vet.

If I had to choose between Science Diet or Dog Chow, I would definitely choose Science Diet. Honestly, Dog Chow is garbage food.

Science Diet is the better of the two, but the best bagged food that you can feed your dog is called "Sensible Choice". It is produced by a company call Royal Canin and can be found at Petco or Pet Supplies Plus. My dog had a heart condition and I did alot of research on dog food and I found that the company only uses products that have been approved for human consumption. This means all of their ingredients are of the highest quality. They even have fruit and vegatable in it as well as real chicken...not beaks and feet. It is comparable in price to Science Diet but is so much healthier.

Remember, whenever you change your dogs food, do it slowly. Mix the old food and the new food gradually until after a few weeks you are only giving the new food. This will help the dogs digestive track and will help you not to clean up doggy diarrhea.

I vote for Dog Chow. Science Diet isn't really any better, just more hyped, and sometimes the vets get a cut for pushing a certain brand. Just make sure, when selecting a brand of dog food, that corn is not the main ingredient. If it is, the dog will just poop more and need to eat more, since it is passing through his system faster. If he's eating more, you're buying more, so you're not really saving money. A brand with meat products as the main ingredient will cost more but go farther.

Look at the label and choose one that has meat as the main ingredient. That is the most important thing b/c dogs are carnivores. Look beyond those two brands as well. Buy whatever for now but check out every brand you can find. Once you find the perfect brand then don't change it. I buy a medium priced cat food that I get from Wal-mart that has chicken as the #1 ingredient. It is cheaper than the Iams that they sell there and the Iams has corn as the #1 ingredient. It took a little research, but now I buy the same thing each time with no worries and my cats are thriving on it better than when they were fed Meow Mix and stuff like that.

Science Diet is fine, as well as Iams, Nutro, Eukanuba, etc.
Dog Chow, Kibbles n Bits, Ol' Roy, and most cheap store brands are junk.
Super-premium foods like Innova are great but not necessary.

By-products are not evil. Inedible parts such as feet/beaks/feathers/etc ARE NOT ALLOWED in pet feed.

Despite great advertising both are low quality.Poor protien/carb content. Check out"The Whole Dog Journal" for lists of the best quality foods.

Both of these foods have too many fillers to be any good . If you want a good food try royal canin ,they have breed specific foods . And the first ingredient should always be meat . I know it is exspensive but worth it in the long run . good luck .
