Small dogs and small kids usually do not mix. You really should wait until the kids are older before getting a dog. Maybe when they are 5&7.

Depends on how much space and time you have for the dog, but there are a few good choices for familes with small kids and size restrictions. The first I would suggest would be a Jack Russel terrier. They are great family dogs and great with kids but they are very energetic and active. They aren't too small that they are easily hurt but don't take much room. Very loving, loyal dogs. My second chioce would be a boston terrier. Wonderful with kids and familes and a Lot of fun. We had two they they were the best friends a kid could have. Another one would be a bulldog (french or english) the french is smaller but both are considered "small dogs". These are nice but a little less active and not real noisy, which might be nice for you. Just use your internet to do as much research as you can and good luck. Small dogs can be awesome. I hope you get a great one.

Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder

Beagles are small and great with kids as are Bassett Hounds. Usually small dogs and small kids don't mix because kids tend to make small dogs nervous out of fear of being hurt. Bigger dogs can handle it. If you can go with a medium sized dog, I strongly suggest Shelties. They are wonderful with kids and extremely smart!!
By the way, Jack Russells are NOT good with small kids! My sister has one and her sister-in-law had one and both bit the small kids. All of my kids have been bitten by my sisters JRT! It's also not true that you can't get a dog now. If you watch your kids closely with the dog, they'll be fine. They have to learn how to handle animals and if they don't get it by experience how will they? My youngest son is 3 and we watched him closely when we first got our Lab pups, now he's wonderful with them since we educated him on what to do and not to do. I wouldn't suggest a puppy though. Puppies don't know limits like adult dogs do and can get rough. They also nip and chew a lot because of teething.

A stuffed dog! Kids younger than 5 have no idea that they are being mean to dogs/pups and pups can really hurt with their razor teeth and nails. I would wait until the kids are older and can be responsible for the care of the dog and appreciate having an animal. I don't have enough time and space to really get into this answer but I ask you to go to the ASPCA website and read why it's a good idea to wait until the kids are older.

Most little dogs don't like kids at all. Good small dogs are Jack Russell terriers. You could also go to a dog pound humane society.
