I'm thinking of buying a digital camera. I'm not sure what mega-pixel camera it should it be. Should I settle for a 5 mega-pixel with? I'm not planning to do much in the way of photography, just family photos and stuff, but once in a while, i do feel like taking some good pics. And u never know, a family pic might be at a great place with good scenery. So help me out here, folks!

mega pixel does not improve the quality of you picture. just the printable size. 5 mega will allow you to print A3 largest while 8 mega will print A2. What you should look for is colour processing and matching and lense quality. usually you can find some very usefull reviews on www.cnet.com.

You can get the camera I have, a Sony Cyber-shot 8.1 megapixels. It is currently the best camera available in the market. Trust me, I know, I've taken pictures that looked so realistic. Its a pretty small camera, about 2 1/4 inches by length and 3 3/4 inches by width. You can switch between megapixels to save space on the memory card: 8.1,3:2, 5, 3,1, VGA (e-mail size), HDTV(lowest possible quality). The camera is very easy to learn to use, and is even touch panel! You can zoom in in both video and photo taking. (5x for photo, and 3x for video) When you zoom in, the quality still stays the same. However, video lighting might be a problem, though. The price ranges from $350 (in ebay) to $400-450 (in stores).

Never base a camera on megapixels. 6MP is a good range since it wil make nice 4x6 and 8X10s. Canons will give you some of the best picture quality for a small camera. Canons have a great onboard JPEG converter so it will have great crisp shots. You may also want to consider Nikon or Sony.

I have a Kodak that is 5 mega pixel with 3x optical zoom. I love it and it takes wonderful pictures. I have even done portraits of the kids in the back yard which led to friends asking me to take pictures of their children and their parties.

depends what you want to use the camera for. obviously the price increases with the number of mega pixels but if you only want it for home use and you arent going to blow it up too big, then 4 should be fine

I would recommend at least a 7 MP. You can get it for less than $300 on nextag.com or something. You'll appreciate the quality and the memories. I have the Sony Cybershot T-10 which takes awesome pictures but does not record very good video in low-light settings. Good luck.

it depends what size of picture you want it. if you just want just 3x4 or 5x7 pictures than 1 to 3 megapix is fine. if you want 8x10 pictures or bigger then you need 3 megapix to 5 megapix. I have 7.2 megapix camera but most of the time I just used 1 megapix or 3 megapix when taking picture. So 5 megapix is good for you.

if it will just be for emails or posting them on sites, 3-5 would do. but if you're planning to print them as posters go for higher. optical zoom should be considered though.
