Humanity, as a whole, has no directed goal. There are too many paradigms to deal with, too many perspectives to reconcile. Humanity, as individuals walk their paths, typically in their small, corner of the world in may fashions. Some chose to focus on work, others family, and still others faith -- those non of those are mutually exclusive. Birth, life, death is the role thrust upon humanity. What you chose to do between both extremes is important, whether you think so, or not.
To quote Emerson, "To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch ... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!"

I'm not sure humanity as a hole is trying to acomplish anything other then the obvious that all species try to acomplish. Survival in as many environments as possible. We try to control our environments as much as possible....wether it;s by religion or sciense. At the individual level most people on this planet just live for something to eat, a place to sleep, and a mate to have children with.

Nothing as a WHOLE. We all have different ideals. Some of us have completely opposite stated purposes.

I would have to a majority of the human race is trying to correct the results of sin. The funny thing is that the harder we try without Christ the more we sin.

IMO, we are sharing in the completion of our creation. We are each to work on ourself to become more of what we were each meant to be. Since we have free will and are the highest form of creation. It makes sense to me that unlike a painting, we are to participate in our unfolding as part of creation. We are works in progress.
