400 pounds per cubic foot, according to the previous answerer, is way too low. Better to reckon on 475 to 500. It varies with the exact composition of the steel.

if it is a regular steel member, a steel manual will give the standard weight per linear foot, or perhaps there is an online manual......For an odd shape, some programs like STAAD will let you input the dimensions and the material, and it will figure the weight. but STAAD is strictly a structural program...there might be a smaller, free program out there.

I assume you are smart enough to calculate volume, since you are asking an engineering question. Steel weighs 490 pounds/cubic ft. Always use the decimal values.
