You have to get permission from the government to bury someone at sea. I've known those that have buried their loved ones at sea... but they were in a casket that had holes in it so it would sink. Never heard of anyone being buried at sea not in a casket.

You might want to contact your state Senator/Congressman to find out the legality of it.

The site below tells you the distance one has to be .. it is 3 nautical miles and must be in the depth of 600 feet or more. A nautical mile is equal to 1.2 statue miles.

The last site below states 500 miles off shore...so it is best to contact the Federal Government and possible your state government on the actual distance, since these two sites have a big differential difference in distance.

burried at sea without a casket is legal ...as long as in international water which mean 250 miles off any coast.

You can be buried at sea. It's often in the form of ashes, but bodies are also "disposed" there.
