A few people have stated that there's no such thing as an atheist, because an atheist says there is not god, but there's not proof that there isn't a god, so they must be agnostic.

But then again, by the same logic, there's no such thing as a Christian becaue a Christian says there's a god, and there's no proof that there's a god, so they must be agnostic as well.

Does this make sense to anyone? Catherine, I'd especially like a response from you, since you were the last one who said this.

Thanks for answering Catherine. However, I'm not sure you quite got my point. You say there's no proof against god, but I'm also noting that there's no proof FOR god, which should make us equally uncertain in your eyes.

No proof has shown that there is a god. There is no evidence for a god, nothing to see, hear, touch, smell, taste - no evidence. So you must believe - because you have no proof, just faith.

I'm not sure where you are going with the breathing thing. I can easily prove that I breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide - there's a mass spectrometer just down the hall.

Vantado - I don't 'choose to believe there is no god'. If someone had never broached the subject, I can't say I ever would have thought of a god. Not believing is the ground state, like not playing tennis while I'm eating. Sure, I'm choosing not to play tennis while I'm eating - but really, why would I play tennis while I'm eating? Sure, I don't believe in god - but it takes no effort, it takes no belief. Believing in god takes extra effort, as does tennis.

That reasoning is really messed up - kinda like the classic "Who's on First" skit.

However - there is no such thing as an Atheists. My point is made by the Atheists who blame God (ie religion) for all the world's woes and they are foolish enough to believe without religion period, that wars would cease to exist, not taking into account there are a large number of murderers and thieves who say they don't believe in God, not allowing for the greed of man being not a religious nature - a driving force to use religion or anything else that can satisfy the human craving for wealth and power.

Anyway - they hate and blame a God they swear up and down does not exist. They hate the idea of people who acknowledge a god they profess does not exist. How can one hate something that is mythical? I don't hate Atheists - they don't exists! Really.

People who believe in God are those who believe by faith and there are those who believe in God by various proofs, regardless if those proofs are agreed on by others or not.

Agnostics down deep know there is a God, but while not absolutely saying he doesn't exist, they are confused because for them some of the dots don't connect "in their minds".., ie.., they don't understand certain things regarding God.

Whether you agree or not - this is a better argument than the one you presented.

that's just silly. "the argument being along the lines of "to claim there isn't a God, you must be omniscient, otherwise God could be one of those things of which you have no knowledge"." atheists don't claim that there is no god, they claim that they don't believe in god, which is the same thing theists say, it's an expression of belief. (the answer that says that atheists know there is no god is wrong. such a thing cannot be known, only believed.) god is not subject to scientific knowledge, either way. science deals with the physical world and religion deals with the spiritual world. they interact, but one can never disprove the other.

AN atheist, is a person without a theory. The atheist and agnostic certainly do believe in god, like all good humanist do. It's man. They are god. They are in control, the god of themselves. You say that their is no evidence of God and I think a statement like that disqualifys you as a thinker. Have you ever been outside? Do you know anything about nature, geograhpy, science, biology, or physics? There is evidence of God everywhere. Besides that, have you ever studied or been taught how to get born again, and recieve biblical salvation? If you think there are no signs of God, you are really missing out. God is great. Go to an Independent, fundemental, Baptist Church. I guarentee, if you pay attention you will feel convicted and blessed. You will see the need that you have for God in you life. If you recieve Jesus Christ as your saviour, your whole world view will change. You will see, and experience things that you have never before. It is the best thing anyone can do with their life. Man, what a relief it is know that you are save and that you don't need this world. God is good. God was good yesterday, he was good today, and he will be good tommarow.

Catherine is not right cause God said in his word that he have dealt to every man a measure of faith and therefore in man's inner soul he cannot help but know there is a God. People do not believe in God cause they cannot see him and want proof- when God is telling them, bless is the man that believes and have not seen him. Atheist choose to believe in no God and christian believes because the holy spirit comes alive in them to do the will of God.

I see your point but i don't totally agree. Some atheists believe in nothing, as in we are the only power in the universe, we are alone. If you don't believe in the Christian God that makes you atheist so technically I'm atheist, even though I believe in Gods and other powers.

why in bloody hell cant xians answer a question "Oh but there is proof have you ever read the bible" listen here o ye of the man boy love tribe, the bible is proof of nothing. No one could say that all the books are there, so there is no way you cant say the very next book says "haha its all bs, we just made that up so jesus wouldnt be charged with man sheep love" not saying it says that but you cant say it doesnt. Dont even think about faith, i banged faith in 8th grade wasnt that good. Then for all you thinkers, this god you are so obsessed with isnt even yours he belongs to the jews, he is a desert god so not the kind you were meant to follow, look towars the north..................................................... the sun is so much better than the son and dont make me tell you the 999 ways thor could kick the sh it out of a carpenter

Atheist -- Break it down:

The prefix "a" means not or without

"theist" means one who believes in a god or gods.

Put them together -- atheist is a person without belief in god or gods.

Being without belief in god is different than believing god does not exist. An infant is an atheist because it is without belief in god.

A person who believes that god does not exist is an anti-theist even though most of them incorrectly call themselves atheists.

Yes, I'm picking nits but you asked. Bottom line: Yes, there are indeed atheists.

That makes absolutely no sense whats so ever. The Christian would never say that there is no proof of God. They would say that God Lives and exists. Your putting your own belief into context of what others believe and when its a matter of faith you can not do that.

Err your logic flawed. An atheist chooses to believe there is no god.

Well by chooses, it is to the same extent one chooses to believe in god.

Your thinking in the context that ones beliefs are soley based off evidence, which is not how Atheists present themselves, nor do religious peoples.

Very wise question.....hats off to you.

I hate more the fact that christians think atheists have no right to be in R&S section. As if having an interest in R&S is so unbelievable. Christians think they have a monopoly on anything religious or spiritual
