Just do the roots - and then let the rest go, bc the more you add color to the rest of the hair, the darker it gets. Even letting color set on the ends for 5 min. will make it darker. No need to do that unless you do want that look. I only do my ends about once a year or twice a year.

It really depends on what you're doing to your hair. If you are bleaching it or using a high-lift tint to lighten your hair, you should only do the roots. After the roots are lightened, you can pull streaks of the bleach or high-lift tint through the rest for just a few minutes. Watch it carefully!
If you are darkening your hair or covering gray, only put it on the roots. You can then mix the rest of the color you have left over with some shampoo, get into the shower or tub, and lather up to blend it in. It should stay on for about 10 minutes or so.
Don't apply to your entire head. Remember, your hair is "dead" the moment it comes out of your scalp and as you brush, blow dry, curl and otherwise fix your hair, you open up the cuticle of your hair. The cuticle of your hair can be temporarily filled in by water, gels and creams, or other products, but it will never be the same as it was when it was short. Hair color, when applied to hair that is damaged (ie: open cuticle) will "grab" onto your hair faster and deeper than hair that is in better health. You run the risk of having the color you want on your scalp and turning your ends very dark (for dark hair color) or white (if you are bleaching it).

Apply hair color to roots for 15 minutes, and the rest for 5-10 minutes.

Depends what color you are going.
Usually you do your roots first.
If you are bleached and you have dark roots then color or bleach from the scalp out to the line of demarcation.
The ends you can just refresh the color at the last ten minutes if it is a tint.
Remember this; The scalp will take faster due to the heat from it and from there on out it may take a bit longer.
Always follow the manufacturers directions...

Just apply it to the re-growth (your roots).......If you are using the same colour, and you feel like your ends need a boost.....
Depending how long you have to leave the root colour on. (apply the roots) in the last 10 Min's of process time......Spray the ends of your hair, with some water, and then emulsify the ends with the colour from your roots, to your ends (only for the last 5 to 7 Min's before the end of your processing time).....this will complete your root time, and re-freshen your ends
Good Luck
