They do create a special bond with their owners but if you are patient and take the time to form a bond with the chihuahua and let it know that you can be trusted and move slow he/she will be able to bond with you as well. I had to giveup my chihuahua mix when my boys were born and she was 4 years old at the time and after being at my grandmas for a few months now it is like she has been there forever. It just takes time. As long as the chihuahua isn't aggressive towards strangers you should be ok.

I've adopted a poodle that lived with another woman for 11 years before coming to me and he has bonded with me wonderfully. They will bond with you, it just takes time.
I have a habit of adopting older pets and the bond I've shared with each of them was the strongest ever. It doesn't matter what age. Dogs know love.

In time, it will become attached to you. Just have a little patience when you get it. At first, let it come to you, so that it can earn your trust.

it will bond with you -have a few days at home with her so she can settle in, speak gently and kindly, establish what the rules are going to be, and it should not be a problem.
