What I am hoping is to put away $100+ per month for about 1 and a half years. I also would like something thats cheap on gas and is reliable.

If you don't have much money consider a 93/94 nissan sentra, they're dead reliable from my experience. A 93-97 corollas are also very reliable and fun to drive, and a later model civic too. Reason I list those years is because those are the years theyll be the cheapest.

Besides reliablility, you looking for sporty? Your best bet is a nissan 200sx, good compromise between sporty and practical. Get a 200sx SE-R and that thing will be fast.

A plush ride would be a toyota camrys division.

Tell us your budget/wants.

$1800? Get a 93/94 sentra. 40mpg, decent pickup, and you can probally find one for cheap with a decent number of miles. Friends dad drives one 200 miles a day to newyork, '93 with close to 200k miles on it.

I agree on the previous suggestions. You should be looking at 1990's Japanese compact cars. If possible, grab a higher end model of a smaller car, such as the 200sx SE-R. It is basically a Sentra, but you will be happier with it.

Or instead of a plain-Jane 4 door civic, try to snag a Del Sol. Yeah, it's a chick car, but what can you do.

Point is, if it is your first car, grab something with just a little style.

Honda Civics, Nissan Sentras, Volkswagons, Corollas... All reliable cars and moderately priced... Dependable..

Though I can appreciate the durability of certain jap cars , you're also going to need to think about servicing this car . Parts availability on older imports can be less than adequate and higher priced . Go domestic , Chevy Cavalier has always been a good line . You can find them readily about anywhere , good on gas , reasonably easy to repair , and good parts availability .

$1800 is your budget?

You're probably looking at early-mid 90s small sedans and coupes with a good amount of miles on them.

Honda Civics are my all-around favorite. Good mpg, nearly "bulletproof" powertrain, and pretty good looking.
