Hey I need info - i have a great dane that had puppies 4 weeks ago today. I started weenign the pups this past Wed. and mom has been doing fine - until i came home tonight and she had thrown up a large amount of food that she had just ate - and two of her teets are huge and they where not like that an hour ago, one is also very firm, and i know thats not a good sign - she also has a 104.5 temp, which i know that is also not good. My question is does anyone know what could be wrong - if its her milk thats too full then i would just have the pups releave her of the pressure - but im scared due to the temp she may have an infection and i dont want to harm the pups. I already called the Vet clinic and they said that i might have to bring her in if the temp dosnt drop but thats all they would tell me over the phone - i used to work there so i know how expensive it can get.

She may have a uterine infection, eclampsia, or mastitis. I would take her to the vet NOW!!! You could try asking them to allow you to pay in installments, but she really needs to see a vet.

Normal temp is around 101 so she has infection either in milk glands or uterus! Could be milk fever which is serious stuff. Is she acting ok with her pups or keeping them away from nursing her? If she is avoiding them then it is very serious.
Either way she can not wait to be seen at vet. We have dealt with this too many times in rescue. You can start bathing her down with cold rags, especially her teets. Push fluids, hold food for now. Are gums pale at all?
She is at risk right now! Get her seen even if on emergency basis.

Sounds like mastitis. With a temp that high I would sure worry. Hot pack those over-packed teats using a cloth (small hand towel would do) that is run in hot water (as hot as YOU can tolerate it on your skin) and hold it on the packed teats.... repeat for about 15 minutes. Do this again in a few hours. DO NOT milk the teats out.... this only causes them to fill again. Hot packing is your best bet. Watch the pups carefully. They can get an infection from this problem. Let them nurse on the normal teats as usual. Ask the Vet about giving her aspirin to bring her temp down.

your dane probably has a clogged milk duct that has caused infection. This happend w/our pregnant dane just before she was due and she also ran fever, had swollen teats, and was in pain- the vet prescribed antibiotics to cure the infection, and she was fine within a couple of days- since this was before the pups were born i'm not sure if the anitbiotics will interfere w/nursing, check w/your vet.

It definitely sounds like mastitis. The temperature is too high to wait around, must take her to emergency clinic right away, or you're risking losing her. Do Not attempt to have any of the pups nurse from her, if mastitis, her milk is like poison now, and it'll kill the pups.
Don't put any hot towels on her either right now, as others suggested, as it'll raise her temperature even more.

It sounds like she has mstitis. With a fever that high, you need to take her to the vet tonight, not tomorrow or Monday. Please get her seen right away. Hope she will be okay.

Well, if you used to work there then you know what you have to do. She could have mastitis, she could have a retained placenta, retained pup, pyometra, etc.
