I have a six year old Schnoodle who we adopted from the local shelter and from the time we got him he has had a deep hatred for cats. We have rabbits and he loves them and lays beside them but if he sees or even smells a cat he goes beserk. He caught a stray cat inside our fence one day and injured it badly. I am an animal lover and would love to adopt a cat from the shelter but I am afraid that my dog won't accept it. Does anyone have any tips on how to get my dog to get over this and accept a cat into our home or is it a lost cause? I would appreciate serious answers only. Thank you.

I recommended this to another asker who gave me a Best Answer or it was voted as Best- I suggest to YOU though a bit different strategy you take dog to the shelter after you have picked the cat you want to adopt and most shelter's usually have a room where you can interact w/ future pets to see how things will go- go to this room w/ your dog , restrained of course-on a leash(short one) have the cat brought in and pet the cat and then pet the dog but let dog smell your hands first and then pet dog let cat smell your hand and repeat this process for a while till you feel the dog is getting more lenient with the cat- if this doesn't seem to work then I would suggest maybe adopting another dog from the shelter! Some dogs just totally cannot stand cats!!The stray that your dog attacked was invading HIS space so that could be why he hurt it! I hope this helps!!! And Good Luck!!

When I got my cats I put the dog outside for a while and let the cats walk around the house so as to leave their scent. Then I put the cat in a crate for a few days to let my dog be able to get used to it. At first he would bark at the crate and go crazy but very quickly got used to it. I think though that some dogs just hate cats and would never get used to them. I am not sure it work for your dog or not. My dog goes berserk in our back yard when he sees a cat, but he is best buds with my two cats. They are all inside animals. Good luck!

Well, I have 5 pit bulls (yes, 5) and I didn't have to train them at all to tolerate my 3 cats. Sort of happened naturally as they were raised around cats since puppyhood. Now all my dogs are 3 years old and they still play with the cats.

As a child my brother had a dog and we about 7 years later introduces my cat and they got on fine. The dog died of heartworm 3 years down the track. My younger brother brought a new puppy who played with his tail and the cat left home one weekend we where away.
get the scent of the new cat and get the dog use to smell the cat scent first. (we did this for my new dog to my younger brother dog) reward your dog if he accepts the new cat with treats.

Go slow on the process !

And make sure that it is not the cat that will not tolerate
the dog !

I used to have two hamsters and two cats living together
in my appartment , sharing the same floor ! (No cages ! ) .

They never bothered each others !

You are the master , just teach your dog how to behave . . .

Good luck !

yes, but you have to take it slowly - I would be tempted to 'rescue' a big mean old Tom cat, and bring him home with the dog ina crate until he calms down! You want a streetwise tough feline that will give as good as he gets, then you'll be OK
