A puppy can be taken away from mom after it is weaned usually at about 6 weeks of age. It should not be removed from the litter until it is about 12-14 weeks of age so that it learns appropriate socialization skills. If taken away from the litter before then, it will need to go to puppy classes in order to learn this behaviors.

And the most importantly, socialization develops and continues to develop for the first year of it's life. The most important socialization occurs after weaning, when the pups are more curious, less dependent on mom and start to play and explore. Play is very important as this is when they learn not to bite hard (bite inhibition) and proper vocalizations (whining, growling, etc). They learn how to approach other dogs, and read signs from dogs.

Way too many people do this too young!!! Pups learn a lot from being with the mom. Pups that remain with mom at least 8-9 wks tend to be healthier and easier to train. First shots and deworm are done around 5 wks. They can start weaning once some teeth start coming in at about 4-6 wks. But they need time to learn the ropes from mom. In rescue we get pups of all ages without a mom for whatever reason. We try to find a surrogate female dog to mother these when real young.

I would encourage a pup be at least 7 wks before considering seperating.

You should never seperate a puppy from it's mother and sibilings until he's at least 8 weeks old. Their socialization period is important from 0 - 7 weeks of age. Just because the puppy develope their teeth at 4 weeks, is not a green light to start getting rid of them.

Most people recommend 6 weeks. I was given my pit bull puppy at two weeks because the mom stopped taking care of them. I continued bottle feeding for the next 4 weeks or so.Then off to the vet for their shots. He is now 5 and 1/2 years old. He turned out great.

That really depends on the puppy's maturity rate.
My pit bull pup had a mouth full of teeth at 4 weeks and I brought him home eating puppy chow and I gave him lots of cottage cheese and sour cream to keep the calcium in his body for his little bones..
He is a huge love monster of a dog now..

If you take them away generally from the mother too early they will have bad teeth and other bone problems and some emotional problems.

at about 1 week they can start drinking milk from a bottle and to be on the safe side a puppy only needs 2 weeks before it can leave it's mom but it also depends on the breeder and how long they want to wait.

At least 7 weeks and preferably 8-10 weeks. AKC will not allow them to go to their new homes until 8 weeks.
