its called a neopolitan mastiff, seriously the best guard dogs, but very expensive, plus they need a special diet with some fresh meat so you will have to cook them some fresh chicken/fish/beef/pork in addition to dogfood.

I agree that Rottweilers are great gaurd dogs when well trained, I watched a friends 8 year old female for a few months, and I loved having her around. Made me feel safe, although all my friends were scared of her, and rightfully so. She was VERY protective of me. I have a 1 1/2 year old female Doberman now, & I will never own another breed again. She is so sweet, extremly smart, and never lets me too far out of her sight. Dobermans were bred to guard & protect their people, & they do it very well. They require a lot of time & attention, though, so if you want a dog to leave chained up in the yard, do not even consider one. They are definatly indoor pets. But they are said to be ranked the 5th smartest breed of dog, which i believe after living with my girl. ( Also, Lhasa Apsos, as well as Shih-tzus, were kept for their ability to bark & alert the actual guard dogs ,usually Mastiffs, to any intruders. Not to actually do the guarding.)

A hungry one, any mutt will do, that is why the junkyard dogs are always so mean, they are hungry and they are on the large side, Shepherd, Mastiff, Collie, Pincer, any dog makes a sound to alert the pack. The dog is just an alarm, so it doesn't really matter what size it is, cept the size makes for a bit more intimidating figure to most humans. But the animal is just to sound an alarm, you are spose to guard your property.

That's a tough question. I really believe it's in the dogs nature to protect or not, with the exception of the miniature breeds. They may mean well, but would end up getting hurt for you.

I had three dogs and now down to two. My Lab/Irish Wolfhound cross, Riley, is huge. Weighs in at around 180lbs and he'd welcome any stranger with open paws. The other one, Romeo, a Rough Collie, lives up to his name and loves everybody. Now on the other hand my Springer Spaniel, Casey, would die to protect me and he only weighed about 35lbs. Go figure...and Casey was the suckiest looking of them all. He fooled many people.

Unfortunately my beloved Casey was the one who passed away at the age of 12.

My vote for best guard dog would have to be a Springer Spaniel.

Any dog that barks will do, and you should not expect anymore than that. Unless the dog has been bred from good lines, with good nerves, and the drives (prey, defensive and fight drives) for personal protection, it won't do anything to physically defend you, or your home. Dogs who do not have good nerves cannot stand the stress of a human physically threatening it. German Shepherds and the Belgian Malinois (if they have good nerves and drives) are the most commonly used dogs for Personal Protection work, and Law Enforcement. Even if you do have a dog with the nerves and drives to do protection work, you still HAVE to train it, and it has to be good protection training from good and experienced trainers. If you don't believe me, ask any K-9 Officer who trains police dogs.

I had a chow/shepherd mix and a Pitt mix of something...lol, anyway they were the most protective of the house. They wouldn't let someone walk on the front sidewalk without me knowing. And they were the sweetest loving animals. They would have probably just licked a burglar to death but to anyone coming close they would scare them off. I'm not saying they were mean, they just were very aware of people near our house. I am a single mom and felt very safe knowing they were in my backyard.

Big dog - Doberman Pinscher. Little dog - Lhasa Apso. Believe it or not, Lhasa's were bred to guard Emperor's long ago in Tibet, that's where they originate from.

Any dog is good for a watch dog, but if you are looking for something that will detoure a break in, I suggest a german shepard or a rottwieler. I have had both and they make good family pets, are loyal, and will keep strangers at bay.

I have an Australian Cattle Dog. She is EXTREMELY protective of her family and home. You should check into it. They are the prettiest of dogs but they are EXTREMELY smart. Mine is Half ACD and Half Border collie. Good Luck
