Hmm ya know this is a lil difficult one to explain. Being a soldier I have spent two years in Iraq. I had the pleasure of having an Iraqi interpreter ride along with us on all of our missions and he really gave me alot of insight into why Iraq is the way it is. Alot of it falls on religion. But the two major players in all of this violence is between the Sunni and Shiite. So part of this is Religious indifference, alot of this is about power struggle, and even more of this is about ingnorance. I could make this really long but I'm going to keep it short and to the point. The best way to explain this is to look at our own country and ask yourself why do Gangs kill other gang members. You see Iraqi's also believe in an eye for an eye so when one gets killed then something has to be done about it and then somebody else gets killed and it just never stops, Because for as long as we live Ignorance will only breed Hate...

Its a religious fight. In a religious conflict, facts don't matter. It doesn't matter that 95% of their beliefs are the same. Look at the Catholics and Protestants. Their main differences are the Pope and divorce. That's pretty much it and yet they've fought for centuries about it. Muslims are no different. Their dispute goes back to right after Mohammed. Once he was gone, there was a power vaccuum at the top of the Muslim hierarchy. Some felt a new patriarch should be chosen from the current leaders (sort of like archbishops choosing a new pope). Others felt it should be a dynastic succession and backed Mohammed's nephew (I think). The first group became Sunnis and the second became Shi'ites. Over the years, the two groups have grown further apart in their beliefs, but remain very similar. Nonetheless, there is still much hatred between them over the differences. That is why they kill their own people. It doesn't make much sense, but strongly held beliefs are involved so sense isn't required.

Yes, its already a Civil War. Why Iraqi's kill their own people?. To answer this, you can look back at history to the U.S.'s own American Civil War. In that war, why did Americans killed each other?. Had any Civil War in every country's history occurred without any bloodshed and killing between people in that country?. The reasons had always been the same: religion, political, racial, or economic.
Only people like G W Bush with his advisers and allies up to this time kept deluding themselves by insisting that Iraq is not in a Civil War, while most Americans and the rest of the world see what it really is.

Susan,
It is simply an inter-cultural power struggle. You have the wanta be leaders, power mongers and the like firing up the oppressed to follow their agenda.
When you are hungry, no real job and fearful for your life you will follow ANYONE that offers a solution.
On top of it all you have the religious fanatisim issue that is NEVER good.
It is VERY similar to a CIVIL WAR and a good look on your part.
It is simply an objection to positive change by the various factions and similar to land owners NOT wanting to give up their SLAVES. I will leave the rest to you but a GREAT QUESTION!

This is much more than a religious conflict. The more terror the insurgents pursue, the more they think they will piss us off enough to give up and go home. Why do you think everything has escalated so much? We are a very determined military and are trying out hardest to bring everything under control. If you can "read between the lines" in the news, we ARE slowly making progress. The evil that we are dealing with is beyond comprehension; radical people that will practically stop at nothing.

Because they have no value of human life. And we are speaking of certain Iraqis, not all of them. There are the few that are just as stuck in that war torn place as people were in the Civil War. We, as Americans, generalize, because of the toll the war has taken on all of us.

Yes, it is a civil war. There are 2 different religious sects in Iraq that are trying to gain control. They will kill each other to do it.

They were living peacefully before???? Are you crazy?? Saddam murdered the kurds by the tens of thousands because of religious differences. All of this is over a worthless religion. What a stupid reason to fight, but hey, they are muslim after all, its in their nature. Im atheist by the way.
