I wouldn't think that it is legit, but it may be really far back in the Golden Retriever bloodlines. There is a dog that looks like a black retriever called a Flat Coated Retriever, and another called a Havawort. If they are AKC DNA registered parents, you can have the puppy DNA tested with AKC to see if it is purebred (it only costs about $40).
It is possible that another male mated with her and only sired one puppy.

Mom and Dad aren't AKC registered then. I had a dog once that was a splitting image of a Golden Retriever. Everything about her said Golden Retriever--except that she was the size of a Corgi. More than one male can "knock up" a female so it's possible she met up with a Black Lab at some point. Or it could be that one of their parents had the Black Lab gene.

We have a dog Casey who has a coat of a Golden Retriever in length and looks, as far as his shape of head and body. He runs between 60 to 70 lbs. The one thing different is he is totally black, except for his gray muzzle since he's at the age of ten now. In the sunlight I sometimes can see an ever so slight orange colored highlight on his coat from different angles. He was found as a pup on a highway with a female sibling that looks like a Black Lab. He was given to us from a neighbor at a year and a half. This picture he has his summer cut which he is in his Labrador disguise.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://biturl.im/aU1Pk
The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don't achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren't putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.
The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.
Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

They are not known as a golden retriever if they are black but it is possible in some cases of mix breeds having golden in them. A flat retriever is the common known name for them. They identicle except they are black, my golden's father was a pure bred golden but his mother was a mix between a golden and a black lab. She looked same as far as coat length, size, and features but was black. however my dog looks like his father, golden. Reguardless if it is a mixed golden or a flat it will be a good dog and excellent with children, loyal, obedient and protective. Pet stores are not very good at determining the breed of a dog, I would ask your vet. And I agree, never buy a dog from a pet store, you never know what you are getting, could get health probs out the ying yang or imbreeding. There are so many dogs out there at shelters and alot I have seen are pure bred or close enough. I have pets for the joy not for shows, so I could care less about papers. some pet stores do have adoption for rescues and thats ok. Please remember to get him or her fixed it not only gives them a longer and healthier life span but helps in reducing the animal pop without homes.

The pictures someone linked to in an earlier post are GREAT. This was the sort of puppy that would have been swiftly killed 140 years ago in England...
People don't like to hear this, but one of the reasons that dogs like Golden Retrievers breed so true to type, is that in the foundation years in Britain, if a blatantly mis-colored puppy occurred in a litter, the gamekeeper (for only the rich could afford the luxury of breeding dogs) was required to quickly cull (exterminate) the puppy. It was common practice to not even tell the Gentleman of the Estate about such slippage's in genetics, least he think he was breeding inferior dogs...

I would assume a lab jumped the fence. Do you have a pic? I would love to see what this dog looks like.

I would say some one is pulling your leg. One is a mix and they are trying to pull the wool over your eyes.
