Literally, a missing of the mark, according to the Hebrew and Greek Bible text. God himself sets the "mark" that his intelligent creatures are to reach. Missing that mark is sin, which is also unrighteousness, or lawlessness. Romans 3:23; 1 John 5:17; 3:4; Sin is anything not in harmony with God's personality, standards, ways, and will, all of which are holy. It may involve wrong conduct, failure to do what should be done, ungodly speech, unclean thoughts, or desires or motives that are selfish. the Bible differentiates between inherited sin and willful sin, between an act of sin over which a person is repentant and the practice of sin.

Let me try, but I don't promise it'll be coherent to everyone...

In short, sin is separation from God, a God who desires oru companionship. When mankind fell, through the disobedience in the Garden, the entire race--at that time, 2--became separated from God's perfection--outside of the definition of "God-ness". We are now in a state where we are not able to not sin as it is an inborn part of who we are. We are tainted. Even though we can all make Godly choices at any time we want, we are never able to do so perfectly inasmuch as none of us are equal to God's perfection. Therefore, the need for grace to bring us up to that standard in God's eyes.

The Bible is less about dos and don'ts (although they are certainly there) and more about the revelation of God's character. I think that purpose of scripture is too often forgotten. Sin is not just a list of rules posted in a book. It's a relationship crisis.

"Sin" means without. In the religious sense it means you are doing something "without" Gods approval.

Murder, theft, lying, coveting, adultery, on and on.

Now, what gets really hairy is when religious empires decide to invent and give you their definition of sin.

They do this in order to scare you, make you feel guilty, and ultimately control your life.

You can always detect if something is really a sin or not.

Even the early church leaders threw in their definitions by corrupting the Bible text in 325AD and then again in 1611.

The overall theme of the Bible, and the overall theme of God and Jesus, is:

"Harmony is harmony. Disharmony is the only sin against God."

If I am reading a Bible verse and it conflicts with the above themes, I run straight to my Greek Hebrew study bible and search for the words from the original Bible texts.

1Jo 3:4 ¶ Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Jam 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth [it] not, to him it is sin.

According to the Bible, sin is both the wrong that we do, and the right things that we don't do. Some call them sins of COmission and sins of Omission.

Not living in a state of unconditional love. One living in unity with God in unconditional love is no longer on the level of law and therefore doing the will of God, Sinless. "God dwells within you as you". If you do not know this then you are a sinner. When light appears, darkness disappears. As God appears sin disappears.

In God's eyes, a white lie is the same as a murder. There are no degrees of sin. But,Jesus died in our place(and rose again) to show that by accepting what He did(and repenting), we may live with Him forever.
