Has anyone had any severe health problems from Celiac Disease?

My mother became severely anemic and lost significant weight before her diagnosis. The doctors thought she had cancer and she was poked and prodded and scanned from head to toe before they finally got the diagnosis right.

Since being on a gluten-free diet for the past few years, she is fine. If she accidentally ingests something with gluten, she has GI problems (mostly diarrhea) of a varying degree, depending on how much and what she ate.

Celiac sprue is an immunologically mediated disease in genetically susceptible individuals caused by intolerance to gluten, resulting in mucosal inflammation, which causes malabsorption. Symptoms usually include diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. Diagnosis is by small-bowel biopsies demonstrating characteristic though not specific pathologic changes of villous atrophy that improve with a strict gluten-free diet.
Please see the web pages for more details on Celiac disease (Sprue).

http://www.glutenfreeforum.com/index.php?act=Login&CODE=00 I don't suffer from Celiac Disease so I don't much about it. I once frequented this site when Dr. thought my son may have had it. Luckily he didn't. This site is a message board for people with Celiac Disease and you may or may not be interested. Have a good day.

Before my diagnoses, i was ill and depressed all of the time. I felt tired all of the time too and when my symptoms were bad, i just slept because i couldn't move as i ached all over. Getting over any illness or operation used to take twice as long. It's so important to stick to a gluten free diet otherwise you could end up with other serious health problems. Take care
