I want to format an old computer and delete stuff off the old harddrive. Can I use an hp recovery disk and put that software on the old computer for word processing,etc. I don't have any original software with the old computer. please give me some options,thanks for any help

Not really. Most recovery disks only work on the systems they were created for. Some check the BIOS for the model number.

the recovery disk is meant for the same PC that it is stored

Even if you can use this recivery disk on yr old computer it migh not run
reason is your old PC has RAM and HD that were way too small for XP to run. The old PC might be designed for Windows 98 with 128 MB RAM and 20 MB HD while an XP needs minimum 1 GB RAM and 100 MB harddrive
