my son had a "viral infection" they gave me no specific name for it, he ran a high fever with it like your son is doing once i started alternating the motrin (every 6 hours) and the tylenol (every 4 hours) his fever dropped down alot. and the dr should have told you that letting him run a constant fever like that is NOT good, the drastic drop is good, just keep it that way as best as possible, it will go up at night when he sleeps thats normal dont freak (i did). let him sleep as much as he wants ( for the most part) his body needs to rest, its trying to fight some tough stuff. they gave my son 2 or 3 shots of antibiotics (strong kind) each day i had to bring him in for blood tests and results (not many), when he is ready to drink he will, pedialyte is good if he like it, my son didnt so i watered down gatorade and he took that, dont push him to drink but make sure he does..if you need more help or have another question id be glad to help..good luck i know what its like..my thoughts are with you

Call you local urgent care or pediatric urgent care if you have one or put a call in to have your doctor paged. They should have given you some guidelines on what to watch for since he has pneumonia. I know sleeping is good when you are sick and managed fevers are good only because it's the body's way of fighting infection but excessive sleep with no fever should be addressed especially when you 19 month old can't tell you how he is feeling yet. Good luck and your doctor should have no problem taking a call anytime day or night, if they do you need to get a better doctor.

Its very scary when tylenol and motrin wont drop the fever. I've had that problem with my son and daughter. If the fever has finally dropped (although there are no guarantees it will stay that low) it is a good thing! The continuous sleeping is likely caused by simply taking that much medicine. Either way, dont let the doctors simply blow it off, like most pediatricians do. Its likely finally backing off, but if anything alerts you that its not, take him to the e.r. And dont let them blow you off!

Dont worry, didnt the doctors say it'll go away within two weeks if you treat the virus properly? Buy him a humifiter so he can cough easily cuz coughing is one of the sytoms of viral Pneumonia and makes sure he has orange juic or apple juice. let him sleep for, like 5-6 hours and wake him up to check on him and give him medicine or stuff....I thought the doctors would give him Amantadine? Hmm, maybe he cant take it cuz he's a lil baby but ask them about it.

Sounds like the only thing that happened is something good - his fever finally broke, however, since he had lost so much sleep (when his fever was higher) - he's probably just tired.
His body is just trying to recover and sometimes sleep is the best medicine for a person.

As long as he's responsive (can be awakened) and the fever is down, it seems you're working in the right direction. Those high fevers can really drain them, so he probably is exhausted. Try to get him to drink something. (If you happen to have any, try a popsicle or try putting ice in a washcloth and see if he'll suck on the ice through the washcloth). Try to sleep near him, if possible, to check on him every couple of hours. It's time to call the dr. if you think breathing is labored or you can't get him totally awake. It's scary to be a mom of a sick baby, but just try to stay calm. Hope he's better very soon!

I would not be concerned in the drop...the meds are doing their job. Sleep is good for him and I would not wake him to have him drink, just make sure you are ready for when he is awake. Keep an eye on his fever and on your meds schedule...you want to alternate motrin and tylenol every 4 hours. When he is awake, if you can give him a bit of water for hydration and maybe a cool orange slice for his sugar levels you should be able to make it until the weekend is over. However, if in doubt, call your local ER and ask a physician or nurse, they will help you out. Good Luck, Mom of 3 that has been there and done that.

I would say it is good that the motrin is working and since he is sleeping I think that is good for him too so his body can start to heal. I would keep trying to give him water though if you can. If he doesn't drink it now I'm sure he will by tomorrow. I think the sleeping is only because he is worn out from being so sick! I hope he is ok! God bless!

Do you have an urgent care or does a local hospital have a line you can call to talk to a nurse? I would not what until the morning if he slept all day and now you still can't rouse him.
If you can't talk to a medical professional quickly, I would take him to an emergency room if you can't get him to wake up!!!!!!!!!

Pardon me, but I thought children were hospitalized if they had viral pneumonia. He should be in the hospital where they can monitor him so there are no complications, etc.
I would take him to the emergency or another doctor. He should not be lethargic.
