ok my son has been running a fever since thursday 102,103 and 104. the lowest i could get it was 101 with tylenaol or motrin. i took him to the doctors and they said he has viral pneumonia, was wheezing and when they took his blood they were concerned cuz his red blood cells were way low. i brought him home and he was sleeping all day whining and crying in his sleep. he woke up about 4 pm and seemed a little ok but still had a 102. i gave him motrin again and he was up for an hour before he started to get drowsy. i took his temp and it was 97.6. a frastic drop. he has been sleeping since 5pm and when i tried to wake him to drink something he did not want it and went back to sleep. he is acting like he has a fever but he doesn't. i have to take him in the morning to have his blood drawn again. should i be worried about the drastic drop ain his temp and him sleeping all day. anyone have any idea what i can do. please worried mom here. (serious answers only please)

You really should call his pediatrician back and update him on the status. He would know better than anyone on here.

When you call, they will have an after hours number for emergencies. Or, your health plan may offer a nurses hotline.

If none of those things applies, I would suggest staying up with him tonight, maybe doing shifts. You should constantly monitopr him to make sure he doesn't have a seizure (commonly caused by high fevers). WAke him up every so often and give him water, if he's been sick, there's a good chance of dehydration.

Never worry that you're being an overly concerned mother. I've worked in pediatrics before - children are very dangerous because they crash quickly. I am not trying to scare you, I am simply validating your concern.

Good luck, I will keep your boy in my prayers.

1) I am not a doctor
2) I believe you should always get expert medical care

With that said. It sounds like you broke his fever and that is why you see the drop in temperature. He sleepiness - sounds like his body did battle against the viral pneumonia and he is tired from that. If by tomorrow he has not gain back some strength - better see the doctor again. As for liquid in take that is important - perhaps some of his favorite fruit juice (the more natural the better). I also know young kids can stand a higher fever than adults can, but that doesn't mean that running high temperatures is okay. I would take his temperature often and any change above normal (perhaps above 101) you should call the doctor. I hope money is not your concern God speed for your son to be up and about.

Hm...It sounds like you are doing the best you can with how your son has been feeling. I know you are worried, but kids are really resilliant, as you probably know.
I probably wouldn't be too worried about the drastic drop in temperature. It sounds like the fever broke and he might be feeling better. You didn't say how old your son is, but the first thing i would be worried about is Dehydration. You can tell if he is dehydrated if he has a dry mouth, lack of tears when crying, etc.
If he refuses liquids, then that is of concern, particularly if he is already dehydrated.
Here is an article to tell you more about dehydration..
I might give him some more tylenol or do something to help him sleep tonight, if he will sleep at all.
I hope your dear son will soon be better.

You didn't say how old he is but I am sure that he is sleeping like that because he doesn't feel well and his body is fighting the infection hard pneumonia is no easy thing to ward off but the drop in his temp is a good thing and I would let him sleep if you are truly concerned and it wont stop nagging at you,you should call his doctor or the local hospital and just ask what they think to ease your mind and I hope all goes well with the blood tests.

Call you local urgent care or pediatric urgent care if you have one or put a call in to have your doctor paged. They should have given you some guidelines on what to watch for since he has pneumonia. I know sleeping is good when you are sick and managed fevers are good only because it's the body's way of fighting infection but excessive sleep with no fever should be addressed especially when you 19 month old can't tell you how he is feeling yet. Good luck and your doctor should have no problem taking a call anytime day or night, if they do you need to get a better doctor.

I would not be worried about the drop in his temp. as this is a good thing. as being so sleepy this could be due to his low red blood cells. I know I can sleep all day when mine is low. I would not worry about making him drink just make sure he has something next to him so when he wants it, it is there for him. I know it can be scary when your baby has a high temp. when my lil girl was 10 mo. she got RSV and was running a temp of 103 on meds. just make sure you dont cover him up when he has a high temp. even if he says he is cold. when your fever rises or drops you will fill cold. just take his temp. and make sure it is not to high.

The drastic drop probably just means the Motrin is working. However, I would call the doctor or a nurse to make sure. He does need to drink-try to make him take some fluids.

Actually, it's pretty normal that Motrin dropped his temperature to normal. It's a good anti-pyretic, and I think it keeps the temperature down longer than Tylenol. It is also normal that he would want to do little more than sleep because his body is fighting an infection, which is exhausting. I think I would just let him sleep, keep an eye on his temperature, keep Motrin in his system, and get as many fluids into him as I could. Hope he feels better soon.

If you call the local hospital they can not give you any medical advice. If I were you I would load the child up in the car and head to the nearest hospital that has a pediatric doctor on staff. If you go to a hospital where there isn't one, they will not know what to do. I would take my child in because of the unresponsiveness and the inability to get them to drink.

Good Luck.

Go to doctor (^_^) and put a cold washcloth on his forehead. Also, make sure he drinks at least two glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice, none of that concirated stuff [its yucky for ya]. I really think u should read this article to understand Viral Pneumonia better

http://www.healthsquare.com/mc/fgmc0407.htm

Buy him a humidifier and his docotrs might give him a medicine called Amantadine and that helps to treat some viruses. Good luck.

p.s. He can be cured within two weeks...so it should go away.
