the cable is in the correct places and secured tightly but nothing will happen.

The obvious first: Using the TV remote, select as TV input or source the input where you connected your PS3
Only one connection out of the Ps3 (HDMI) - disconnect component, etc.
Set the Ps3 at 720p or 1080i (unless you are 100% your TV supports 1080p)
Try another cable

Make sure the PS3 is selected in HDMI mode?
Could be something wrong with your tv.

the tv has to be in hdmi mode
but i doubt that it gets hooked up to hdmi
probably like my xbox gets hooked up - to component 1
