Decongestants like guaifenesin (Mucinex) and pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) might help; people with allergies also find an antihistamine helpful.

If your ears are hurting due to pressure or fluid build-up, an over-the-counter pain reliever (aspirin/acetaminophen/ibuprofen) should help. Applying heat to the ear, such as a hot water bottle) also helps ease some of the discomfort.

For most people the fluid will drain on its own over the course of a few weeks. For some, the Eustachian tube does not open/close properly to allow for drainage, or it is at an angle that does not facilitate the drainage the way it should. In some cases, enlarged adenoids and/or tonsils cause blockage of the Eustachian tubes that prevent the fluid from draining.

If this is a frequent or chronic problem, I suggest consulting an ear specialist (otologist) for a thorough evaluation. A hearing test which includes a measurement of middle ear pressure may also be performed. If your symptoms include fever, acute pain, severe loss of hearing, drainage/discharge from the ear(s), or spinning dizziness please consult your doctor as soon as possible. I hope you feel better soon!

The symptoms of tinnitus can cause a lot of annoyance and problems for the sufferer. And on top of that, the symptoms could be confusing as well. Let us take an example to understand this better.

You were leading a perfectly good life, going to work and coming back home everyday, but all of a sudden you begin to hear strange noises in the ear. Of course you believe that there must be a source of these noises. But strangely, no one else seems to hear them. You might become scared and think that the noises are coming from within your body, and so you go and meet your doctor. After a few examinations, the doc confirms that everything is fine within you. But the problem is, you still hear these noises. They are beginning to get on your nerves and affect you at work. And worst, the noises seem to become worse at night, robbing you of your precious sleep.

Do not blow your nose! If you have congestion or just running, mix a pinch of salt in 1/4 cup warm water, and sniff it up your nose (while your head is over a sink) All sinus's will drain. At night, get a cool mist humidifier, and add a pint of hydrogen peroxide to a gallon of water, and run it while you sleep at night.
