Hatchback is used in reference to a car when the rear area of the car, including the rear window, lifts upward to allow access. In addition to this, the rear of the car will be slanted downward from the roof toward the ground. It can have two or four doors. Do a search for pictures of the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus ZX3 and ZX5, and Hyundai Elantra GT, and look for pictures of the rear of the car.
In a standard car such as a sedan, coupe, or convertible, only the portion beneath the rear glass will open (called a trunk). Also, in this portion beneath the rear glass, the trunk is an extension of the car. It can have two or four doors. Search for pictures of the Volkswagen Jetta, Ford Fusion, and Hyundai Sonata for comparison.
A station wagon is essentially similar to the hatchback, but with four doors, a longer cargo area behind the rear doors, often with a third row of seats, and is based on larger cars. Also, the back isn't normally slanted, but more squared off for more room, like a truck with a cap on the back. Look for pictures of the Subaru Outback, Mercedes-Benz E500 Estate, and Volvo V70.

The roof of the car is hatched from the front to the back. This is a provision made by the manufacturer. This is called hatchback.

Hatchback refers to a vehicle in which the trunk consists rear glass and the metal frame around the glass lifting up at the same time at an angle to allow more access into the trunk when open. ie. 3000gt, Firebird, Camaro. A vehicle with a regular trunk will not have the glass open with it.

It means that it was part of a group of cars similar to all of the cops having the same car but not necessarily only cops. You have rental fleets also. Either way the cars probably had lots of miles on them and were sold so new cars could be purchased. The fleet of cars may have been maintained and perhaps that is the message he was relaying, but check the wear and tear and the mileage. Be ware

It's just a car which opens on the backend....instead of strictly opening to the trunk space.
